Mission Statement of Zion Lutheran Church

We are a Community of faith sharing Christ's love serving all people.

"We are a Community of faith"  We are held together by one Lord, one faith, one baptism. Though we are a diverse people, faith in Jesus unites us.

"sharing Christ's love"  We are blessed by Christ's love to be a blessing to others. Our mission includes sharing what God has given us, ourselves, our time, our possessions, signs of God's love.

"serving all people."  We welcome and serve all people, without distinction.

We are an ELCA congregation in the Metropolitan New York Synod. On December 15, 2007, we celebrated our 113th Anniversary of service to the Lord and the community of Staten Island.

Important News: Zion now has a pastor.  Pastor Betsy Diver was called to Zion by a majority vote, after a reception in November and has started working on January 2nd.

See pictures of the Installation of Pastor Betsy on April 13, 2008

Zion has two worship services on Sunday morning starting at 8:30, followed by Sunday school for all ages at 9:15. The late service starts at 10:45 and is followed by a coffee hour at 11:45. All are welcome.

We need volunteers to help staff the nursery at the 10:45 AM worship service.  Please call the Church Office if you are interested.

We are handicapped accessible for worship service and all other activities:
Our sanctuary is at ground level.
We have elevator access to all floors of the main building.

Need a ride to attend the 10:45 AM worship service?  Call the church office by Friday afternoon (981-3151).

Volunteer Opportunities - Call the Church Office if you are interested in volunteering for:
Driving the church van on Sunday mornings to pickup people who need a ride.
Helping with our nursing home ministries on Sunday mornings (Golden Gate and Clove Lakes)

Mission Board needs help -- can you make a meat loaf, or whip up some mashed potatoes? We would like to help feed about 60 women and children. We need several people to make simple dishes and bring them to church on our designated date for pick up by the shelter. 'Can't cook donations' for food would also be helpful. Each dinner will have a theme. Meat loaf, stews, chicken, etc. Each person would be asked to make a dish for 6-8 people. If you're interested in this project please let us know so we can let the shelter know and set up some dates. Once again this year we will be collecting food for Thanksgiving baskets. Collections will be on Nov 5th and 12th. Baskets will be distributed on Sunday, November 19. Call the church office for more information.

Food for the Hungry  Purchase and deliver food to the local food bank. Contact the church office (718) 981-3151.

Defensive Driving Course  An AARP Defensive Driving Course ("55 Alive") is offered the last Tuesday of every month, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Contact the instructor, Mr. Bill Dunn, (718) 987-5698.

The Zion Preschool Fundraiser on Wednesday April 23,2008 at Jimmy Max Restaurant was a success. Thanks to all who supported it!
the Zion Preschool Annual Art Show will be held from May 6th through May 9th in the Art Gallery (also known as the Gym). The children proudly display their paintings and creative art projects. Each class will present special art work which will decorate the hallway leading to the Gallery. All are welcome to visit and view the Art Show from 11:10 to 11:30 and 3:10 to 3:30, May 6 to May 0.
The annual family picnic will take place on Thursday May 15th and Friday May 16 from 11:00AM to 1:30PM. Rain dates are May 20th and May 21st. Zion Preschool families will gather together for fun and fellowship at their picnics.
Butterflies are amazing insects that are easily recognizable to children of all ages. Children are immediately intrigued by a caterpillar's wiggly body and attracted to a butterfly's colorful wings. For these reasons, butterflies provide a wonderful introduction to the world of insects. This month the students will actually be learning about metamorphosis! They will observe tiny caterpillars eating and growing, spinning their chrysalis and finally watching the chrysalis break open and the butterfly emerge! This life cycle science activity is fun and hands-on and one the children will greatly enjoy. The butterflies will be released at the Family Picnics.
The Preschool will be closed on Monday May 26th in observance of Memorial Day. Take time to reflect on the sacrifices that our armed forces have given in the past and continue to give today. May God Bless our troops in Iraq and on all military bases throughout the world.
Registration has begun for ZION ZUMMER CAMP! Camp runs for four weeks from June 30 to July 25. The children attend camp five mornings a week from 9AM to 12 Noon. Children must have attended on year of Preschool to be eligible to attend (three and four year olds). Children will be accepted in grades Pre-K through Grade 4. Registration for camp will begin in February for Zion Church members, Zion Preschool Students and last year's attendees. All others may register in March. Call the Preschool Office at (718)981-3623 or 981-4063. for more information and registration forms.
